Our Day In Bury St. Edmunds

Yesterday, Friday, Jonny and I spent the afternoon on a newcomers "coach"-bus- tour that was offered by the base. It was a requirement for his FTAC class, so I jumped on as well! It was very informative for me, to have a tour of the three air bases in the area. They explained what the buildings were and why you might go there, so just very helpful with getting an idea on where everything is! Then after seeing all of Lakenheath, Mildenhall, and Feltwell, they took us to a close, historical village called Bury St. Edmunds. There we ate lunch at Queens Head, which is a local pub, had a tour of a cathedral, and then some time to ourselves prior to heading back home. The pub was great, it was about 11am in the morning and we walked in to two elderly men drinking a stein of warm beer and reading the morning newspaper. Jonny and I ordered roasted chicken and bacon sandwiches, which were really good! While we waited for our food to arrive, Jonny enjoyed himself trying to figure out the local slot machine. After eating, we walked down the street to the St. Edmundsbury Cathedral where we had a tour of the historic church. It is a beautiful cathedral with giant stain glass windows, and that connects to the Abby Gardens. This was a floral landscaped park that takes you to the ruins of the old Abby. The town tore the Abby down in 1637 and used the pieces as supplies in their homes. The area is actually where the Magna Charta was established! The whole area was really mind blowing to think of how large the Abby at one time was. And the garden area was filled with flowers of every kind and color. The center of the cathedral is actually under a bif of construction, but they are about to add a large tower. It is already so intricate and large; it's hard to imagine adding another tower! So Jonny and I will definitely be visiting the finished work in March!

This morning Jonny and I woke up early and headed to town center for our first Downham Market Day! There was a lot of fresh produce, baked goods, and even dog toys and bird feed ;) They had all sorts of things and everything looked and smelled so good! Then for lunch we went to Reeds Cafe and had some sandwiches and baguettes. Tomorrow we are hoping to head up torwards Kings Lynn and maybe catch the coast! I'm just hoping to come home with some of the yummy looking carrot cake!
