Getting Ready for the Holidays!

Wow! Time sure flies by! I just can’t believe that Thanksgiving is this week! It seemed to creep up on me because I haven’t noticed much around in regards to Thanksgiving, but I guess that would make sense since we live in England =) However, Christmas is EVERYWHERE! It sure puts you in the Holiday mood early! I found myself pulling out my Christmas box about twenty minutes ago, couldn’t resist the urge any longer. Next on my list is finding us a tree! It’s not like we can run down to King Soopers or Safeway with some ropes! But I just love the smell of Christmas trees, in my opinion, no candle scent can compare! But while Christmas is still, oh 33 days away, Thanksgiving is coming up this week which we are very excited for! I planned out a simple, but fun, menu with Amy including a Ham with Champagne and Vanilla Glaze, as well as a Pumpkin Cheesecake for dessert. I’m looking forward to giving those a try. We’re not big turkey eaters, so we’re breaking the turkey tradition a bit, and figured I’d try something new for dessert. We love cheesecake and pumpkin pie, so Pumpkin Cheesecake should go over nicely for us! I began a bit on the Thanksgiving cooking today when I woke up and realized we were out of bread, it was pouring down rain, and Jonny had the car at work today. So I decided to make some bread. Little did I know, that would be an all day project =). So, about 5 hours later I have two loafs of bread, sandwich buns, and rolls for Thanksgiving! I must say, they taste very good and I was pretty impressed with myself! Furthermore, we’re also looking forward to having some visitors this week as well! Joanna and Jeremy are going on a missions trip to India, but are stopping by to visit us for about a week prior to the trip. It will sure be nice to have some family over for the Holidays!
Last week the Civil Engineer Squadron celebrated Thanksgiving together through a Thanksgiving Luncheon held, where else, at the fire department. They had the whole bay cleared out and set up with tables and chairs for about 400 people. Each shop member brought some type of casserole or Thanksgiving favorite to share and everybody ate and had a great time. Amy and I arrived together right at noon, and the line was from one end of the bay to the other. We waited in line with friends, and then suddenly the fire alarm went off, and for some reason the line got much shorter…Only about five minutes later they got back and were bummed they had to postpone their meal due to burnt toast. Ah the joys of being a firefighter! I was actually just on the phone with Jonny and they got a call for someone stuck in an elevator. But the luncheon was a lot of fun, and it was fun to spend a few hours during the work day with Jonny!
The rest of the week was eventful as well! Amy’s neighbor accidentally backed into my car the other evening. Thankfully, the damage is only cosmetic, so we had to take it in for an estimate to an auto shop right by the Lakenheath Train Station where they took pictures and did their thing to come up with an estimate for the insurance company. I spoke with a man yesterday in regards to my old, itty-bitty car, and he so kindly informed me that my car was “beyond economic repair”. We laughed a bit at the fact that my car is so old, that a small dent in the side rear totals it! So this week I will be taking a trip to the legal office on base to figure out what the UK road laws are in regards to a vehicle that is classified as mine. Keeping my fingers crossed that since the damage is only cosmetic, I can still drive my car! I love it! It fits so well everywhere!
I have also been offered a Key Spouse position for the A Shift at the Fire Department. Basically a Key Spouse makes sure that those who have deployed spouses are taken care of. They also organize different squadron events and help other spouses and families from the shop get involved. So I am definitely excited to accept that this week! They struggle with the Fire wives schedule, especially those withchildren, because if their husband/wife is working, there’s usually nobody to watch the kids, so I am excited to get in there with the other two Keys from B Shift and get some fun stuff planned for the Fire Department!
Also, this past Thursday, Jonny and I had some fun photos taken of us in Bury St. Edmunds in the Abbey Gardens! I have uploaded them to photobucket.com, so click on the slideshow and if you want you can order prints for yourself!
Well, we hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving, no matter where in the world you spend it!
