Today Jonny took flight to England! He left the Colorado Springs Airport this morning at 10:55 and arrived to Dallas Fort Worth at 1:30, where he will hang out until his connecting flight to Heathrow London at 4:45, landing at 7:30am UK time. His flight will be just a bit over 9 hours long While we were packing his things last night, I gave him our camera, so hopefully he will remember to take pictures and share with us his first day in England, hopefully ;)
Jonny is headed to a base titled Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom, which is located 70 miles northeast of London and 25 miles from Cambridge. As the host wing, the 48th Fighter Wing is also designated the Air Force’s Statue of Liberty Wing - making it the only wing with both a numerical designation and an official name. The Liberty Wing has nearly 5,700 active-duty military members, 2,000 British and U.S. civilians. In addition to supporting three combat-ready squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15C Eagle fighter aircraft, the Liberty Wing houses the 56th Rescue Squadron’s HH-60G Combat Search and Rescue helicopters. RAF Lakenheath is the largest U.S. Air Force-operated base in England and the only U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) F-15 fighter wing. With so many planes going through the base, AF firefighters are a must! Someone from the fire station, (where he will spending lots of time at! )will be picking him up when he arrives Tuesday morning. We are not sure what his schedule will look like, but we do know he will be spending the first couple of weeks familiarizing himself with the base while getting all checked in and ready to go for the next 3 years!
As for me, still waiting...waiting...waiting for my military passport/UK visa to arrive. Once I have those I will be obtaining my ticket to join my wonderful husband overseas! The movers will be coming to the house tomorrow morning for a walk through inspection and inventory of our items, and then will pack and begin the shipping process on Thursday! One step closer!
The base website is www.lakenheath.af.mil with loads of general information about the base and the area, including pictures to tide everyone over until he posts some others for us to look at!
